Concrete driveways are so durable that even with minimal maintenance, they can last for decades. With regular care, however, they last even longer and they remain aesthetically pleasing throughout their lifetime. If you have a concrete parking lot, sidewalk, or driveway, here are some maintenance tips to help you keep it in tiptop shape:

Regular Cleaning is Important

Sweep the surface regularly and clean out stains before they sink in too deep. If your concrete is already stained, use hot water and an alkaline degreaser to remove oil and grease stains. Cleaners that contain oxalic acid can be used to remove rust stains, and chemical strippers are effective for graffiti.

Reseal Your Driveway Regularly

Sealers give concrete driveways a polished and professional look. They also help prevent stains from sinking into the surface. How often a concrete surface is resealed depends on how much traffic it receives and the prevailing weather conditions. On average, resealing may be needed every 2 years. Consult with concrete construction specialists before making any decisions vis-à-vis resealing.

Avoid De-icing Chemicals

During winter, deicers are used to melt snow off—and prevent the re-formation of snow on—driveways and parking lots. Do not use deicers on concrete surfaces, they contain chemicals (e.g. Ammonium sulfates and ammonium nitrates) that attack the concrete chemically. Within a year of installation, your concrete driveway is particularly vulnerable to chemical attack. Pouring sand on the ice to provide vehicles with traction is a temporary fix.

A polished, well-maintained concrete driveway adds beauty and prestige to your business location. It is in your best interest that it remains so.
